Message from the General Chair
On behalf of the Conference Committee, it is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 33rd International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and ICs (ISPSD 2021). It will be held between 30th of May and 3rd of June, 2021, in Nagoya Congress Center in Nagoya city plus online virtual platform as a hybrid conference form.
ISPSD brings together the world’s foremost experts and leading companies on power devices and integrated circuit technology. Since the first meeting held in Tokyo in 1988, ISPSD has become the premier international forum for technical discussions in all aspects of power semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. The conference location is rotating each year among Japan, North America, Europe and other regions since 2015. ISPSD will return to Japan for the first time in four years since 2017.
ISPSD2021 will be held in the city Nagoya geographically located in the center of Japan as a real part of our conference. Nagoya is the capital of Aichi prefecture which is a focus of Chukyo metropolitan area, the third largest metropolitan area in Japan. Aichi Prefecture is known as a major concentration area of the automotive industry, and it can be said that the new movement of vehicle electrification started here. There is no doubt that vehicle electrification has created a new big market for power semiconductor devices. The aerospace and aircraft industries have also accumulated in this area. The maglev railway between Tokyo and Nagoya is scheduled to open in 2027, and the railway company and the rolling stock manufacturer are located in Nagoya. That is, this area has played a central role in the modern Japanese manufacturing industry. On the other hand, Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City are also widely known as samurai towns. Aichi is the hometown of the most famous shoguns in history: Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Ieyasu Tokugawa. It is a unique area that combines modern industry and samurai history. Nagoya is also known for its unique local cuisine, so remembering the word "Nagoya meshi (Nagoya cuisine)" will give you more opportunities to get in touch with the charm of Nagoya. We trust you and your family will enjoy your stay in Nagoya.
The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic continues, and there is no guarantee that the pandemic will end at the end of May when ISPSD2021 will be held. We have calmly accepted such a situation and decided that this ISPSD2021 will provide a virtual platform in parallel with real for participants who have difficulty coming to Nagoya. Virtual participation has its drawbacks, such as lost opportunities of face-to-face deep technical discussions in real venues, heartwarming contacts with many friends and building new talent networks. However, there are many good things in virtual participation. This new hybrid conference form will be able to provide an effective solution not only for those who could not come to Nagoya because of COVID-19 pandemic, but also for those who would be worried about the schedule or the burden of transportation expenses to Japan. We can't know if this real plus virtual hybrid form will take standard as a form of future ISPSD after the COVID-19 pandemic, but, at least, we will challenge the new form to solve the current problems and to think about the future form of ISPSD. We also promise and hope that you will learn and be inspired a lot through virtual participation of ISPDS2021.
I sincerely thank the Organizing Committee, the Technical Program Committee and the Advisory Committee for their contributions and supports to ISPSD 2021.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you attending ISPSD 2021. I wish you an informative, valuable and memorable experience in ISPSD2021 Nagoya real plus virtual platform.
