Message from the General Chair
On behalf of the Conference Committee, it is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 33rd International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and ICs (ISPSD 2021). It will be held between 30th of May and 3rd of June, 2021 as a FULL VIRTUAL CONFERENCE.
ISPSD brings together the world’s foremost experts and leading companies on power devices and integrated circuit technology. Since the first meeting held in Tokyo in 1988, ISPSD has become the premier international forum for technical discussions in all aspects of power semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. The conference location is rotating each year among Japan, North America, Europe and other regions since 2015. ISPSD will return to Japan for the first time in four years since 2017.
ISPSD 2021 had been announced as a hybrid conference with both a real conference site in Nagoya (Japan) and a virtual platform. While based on current situation of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, we finally decided to change the conference form from hybrid to full virtual to minimize the risk.
Virtual participation has its drawbacks, such as lost opportunities of face-to-face deep technical discussions in real venues, heartwarming contacts with many friends and building new talent networks. However, there are many good things in virtual participation. This Full Virtual Conference form will provide an effective solution for those who would be worried about the schedule or the burden of transportation expenses to Japan for a real conference. And, furthermore, taking advantage of the relatively low operating costs, we set the student participation costs as low as possible. We hope that many students from all over the world will attend this conference and learn a lot about power semiconductor devices and related technologies from this advantage.
We will call this conference as ISPSD 2021 “Nagoya” in spite of a Full Virtual Conference since we have a real site of administration office for this Conference in Nagoya and want to show our gratitude for some parties in Nagoya which collaborate with us for the preparation of ISPSD2021 in the last some years.
The city Nagoya is geographically located in the center of Japan. Nagoya is the capital of Aichi prefecture which is a focus of the Chukyo metropolitan area, the third largest metropolitan area in Japan. Aichi Prefecture is known as a major concentration area of the automotive industry, and it can be said that the new movement of vehicle electrification started here. There is no doubt that vehicle electrification has created a new big market for power semiconductor devices. The aerospace and aircraft industries have also accumulated in this area. The maglev railway between Tokyo and Nagoya is scheduled to open in 2027, and the railway company and the rolling stock manufacturer are located in Nagoya. That is, this area has played a central role in the modern Japanese manufacturing industry. On the other hand, Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City are also widely known as samurai towns. Aichi is the hometown of the most famous shoguns in history: Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Ieyasu Tokugawa. It is a unique area that combines modern industry and samurai history. Nagoya is also known for its unique local cuisine, so remembering the word "Nagoya meshi (Nagoya cuisine)" will give you more opportunities to get in touch with the charm of Nagoya. We believe Nagoya will be a great place for you and your family to travel after the COVID-19 pandemic.
I sincerely thank the Organizing Committee, the Technical Program Committee and the Advisory Committee for their contributions and support to ISPSD 2021 Nagoya Full Virtual Conference.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you attending ISPSD 2021. I wish you an informative, valuable and memorable experience in ISPSD 2021 Nagoya Full Virtual Conference.
